Texas Ramp Project -
Website Redesign

What is Texas Ramp?: The Texas Ramp Project is a nonprofit working to provide low-income older adults and people with disabilities free wheelchair ramps at their own homes.

The Challenge: Users were finding it difficult to navigate the site so that they could successfully apply as a volunteer and to find a date / time that worked for them to volunteer.

The Solution: Redesign the website so that users wishing to volunteer were able to do so easily and successfully with minimal issue.

Approach

My Role: UX Researcher & Designer

Responsibilities: User research, Wireframing, Prototyping, User testing

Research

In order to learn more about users' personal experiences when they: 1) sought out organizations to volunteer with; 2) signed up to become a volunteer and the obstacles they faced; and 3) faced issues when volunteering, I created a volunteer survey to assist in gathering appropriate users to interview.

User Persona

Taylor is a natural helper at heart. They described themselves as an empathetic person who believes that supporting one another is the only way to success.

Taylor loves to volunteer at non-profit organizations that have a mission and goal that aligns with their own heart (helping those who are less fortunate).

Feature Prioritization

Research allowed us to see which features needed the redesign most:

  • Improve volunteer sign up form

  • Incorporate impact quotes into website

  • RWD for mobile-friendly experience

Style Tile

Sketches / Wireframes

With prototypes started, we conducted a testing plan that focused on:

  1. Sign up to be a volunteer

  2. Locate the calendar of available dates

  3. Donate to the organization

Results showed that while task 1 was easy to complete, users struggled some with task 2 and 3.

Iterations

With iterations from user testing on the lo-fi prototype, I was able to focus on refining the volunteer application and calendar so that it remained on a singular page, and served as a pop up window to ensure ease of use and to keep the user engaged without having to move from page to page.

Impact & Future Developments

Impact: Users had a success rate of 87-99% in tasks 2 and 3 after iterations.

Iterations included adding a 'volunteer confirmation' page on mobile.

Future developments will include editing CTA button phrases for easier navigation, and a share feature on mobile so users can share volunteer dates and experiences.
